The Basics To A Sound, Responsive And Secure Personal Computer System

Despite what you may believe, Microsoft Windows and many other name brand software and hardware products are far from problem free and secure. Unfortunately, if you do not take the proper precautions to save and protect your files, you are most likely to eventually loose some or all of your valuable information. Physically remove unused files and files remaining after a program is uninstalled. Uninstall programs almost never remove all of the files and directories they created. Remove as many unnecessary Program-Menu links from Windows Start-Menu as possible. The more Menu links, the slower Windows will load and function. Uninstall all programs that are never used. The more programs installed - the slower Windows will perform. Defragment and optimize your hard drive(s) on a weekly or monthly basis depending on the frequency you install and uninstall software and modify personal files. Clean and optimize your Windows registry file periodically, especially in the case where you install and uninstall software frequently. Run Scandisk on all hard drives periodically or when you suspect a problem with your hard drive or files. Back up your personal files frequently on tape or other reliable media. Make several back up copies by rotating your back up media. Back up your operating system and software programs after installing new software programs. Install a good Anti-Virus program that will protect your boot sector, program and personal files and internal and external drives. Computer viruses are as common as the cold and are most likely to eventually find you. Keep your system clean inside. Clean it yourself or hire somebody to clean it for you. Dust accumulates into dirt and can damage your system. Keep printers and other dust producing objects away from your computer system. Buy a dependable surge protector. Although they are not guaranteed to protect, they might help. Do not test your luck when power failure is expected or likely.
