The Internet And World Wide Web What is the Internet? The Internet is the linking of hundreds of thousands of computers to communicate with each other. Communication is accomplished via a website. The "information superhighway" that is made possible by standard transmission control protocols/Internet protocols (TCP/IP). Originally developed for the U.S. military in 1969 during the Cold War, it grew to include educational and research institutions. Eventually, the arcane commands formerly used to access the Internet became unnecessary. The Internet includes the World Wide Web, Usenet user groups, and newsgroups. The World Wide Web (WWW), also known as the Web, is the portion of the Internet that has a graphical user interface (GUI) composed of web servers that provide access to websites and web pages. Uniform Resource Locator (URL) is the address used to locate a website or page on the web -- usually in the format of http://www.domain.com/page.html. The information in a URL gives you the ability to jump from one location on the web to another with just a click of your mouse. Pronounced as either "U-R-L" or "Earl", it is the standardized addressing or naming system used for locating websites over the Internet. Also known as an Internet address or web address. A web browser is a software application used to make navigating the Internet easy for the user by providing a graphical user interface (GUI) so the user can click menus, icons, or buttons rather than learning difficult computer commands. Also called a web client because the browser application resides on the client, or the computer of the individual using it, rather than residing on a web server. The most popular browsers are Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, and AOL's browser. A web page is a single document on the World Wide Web that is specified by a unique address or URL and that contains text, hyperlinks, and graphics. A website is the means by which you view information on the Internet. Comprised of software (or HTML code) and hardware (computers and servers) which is a group of similar web pages linked by hyperlinks and managed by a single company, organization, or individual. A website may include text, graphics, audio and video files, and hyperlinks to other web pages. A web server (or server) is Computer hardware where web pages are stored and accessed by others using web client software (a browser), or the computer software that allows the user to access the web pages. A Domain Name is an addressing construct used for identifying and locating computers on the Internet. Domain names provide a system of easy-to-remember Internet addresses, which can be translated by the Domain Name System (DNS) into the numeric addresses (Internet Protocol (IP) numbers) used by the network. Today, the World Wide Web (WWW), a Globally Accessible Interface, is a means for millions of people to see, learn and even order your products and services from their own home or office computers. One of the most exciting phenomena to unfold over the past few years is the interest in the Internet and the World Wide Web. At the present time, many individuals and companies are signing up daily and by all accounts this explosion will continue and even gain momentum in the near future, even more so, with the introduction of WebTV. Companies are using the Web to advertise their services and products for less than a local newspaper ad. Individuals are using the Web for all sorts of activities from general information gathering to specific searches for goods and services in their privacy, spare time, and from their home.
